THE JAM: BOYS ABOUT TOWN
Hace ahora justo 50 años los de Woking actuaron en el 100 club de Londres (diciembre de 1976), lo que marcó su inicio en la emergente escena punk/new wave/mod. En su siguiente visita al famoso club de la capital inglesa, el 11 de septiembre de 1977, su concierto fue grabado y emitido en USA, como avanzadilla de su primera gira a la superpotencia, que coincidió con el lanzamiento de su segundo álbum “This Is The Modern World”. The Jam volvieron cuatro veces más antes de separarse.

En esta muestra expositiva obra de Jay Schwartz nos centramos en sus fotografías a The Jam en la Segunda tercera y cuarta visita a USA.

Exactly 50 years ago, the band from Woking performed at the 100 Club in London (December 1976), marking their debut on the emerging punk/new wave/mod scene. On their next visit to the famous club in the british capital, on September 11th 1977, their concert was recorded and broadcast in the USA, as a precursor to their upcoming first tour in the country, that coincided with the release of their second album, ‘This Is The Modern world’. The Jam came back four more times before they split.

In this exhibition of Jay Schwartz’s work, we focus on his photographs of The Jam during their second, third and fourth visits to the USA.

En una etapa anterior de su vida, Jay Schwartz fue periodista musical, fotógrafo y publicista, y trabajó en la escena musical punk rock y new wave de Filadelfia desde sus inicios. Entre sus fotos se encuentran imágenes de las primeras actuaciones de leyendas como The Ramones, The Talking Heads, Gang of Four, The B-52’s, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Blondie y muchos, muchos más. Incluyen instantáneas de conciertos, escenas entre bastidores y apariciones en tiendas de discos. Aunque estas fotografías se publicaron en ocasiones en publicaciones como «New York Rocker», «Trouser Press» y en diversas revistas locales, la mayoría de las imágenes permanecieron ocultas al gran público… hasta 2025, cuando una galería de fotografía de Filadelfia organizó una exposición de estas imágenes titulada «I BELONGED TO THE BLANK GENERATION», que tuvo una acogida entusiasta.

Esta exposición, BOYS ABOUT TOWN, se centra exclusivamente en imágenes de The Jam, captadas durante tres giras distintas por Estados Unidos. The Jam siempre fue uno de los grupos favoritos de Schwartz, y al revisar sus viejos negativos (la mayoría de las cuales nunca se habían impreso), se dio cuenta de que había material suficiente para organizar una exposición completa dedicada a este importante grupo. Las copias en gelatina de plata, todas ampliaciones procesadas de forma analógica, se imprimieron expresamente para la muestra «Ye-Ye».

A principios de la década de 1990, Jay Schwartz había abandonado prácticamente la fotografía profesional para centrarse en coleccionar y proyectar copias en 16 mm de películas raras y de culto, y su ciclo de proyecciones «Secret Cinema» sigue en activo hoy en día. Desde 1995, y durante toda la década siguiente, «Secret Cinema» fue invitado al Festival Internacional de Cine de Gijón.

In an earlier life, Jay Schwartz was a music journalist, photographer and publicist, working in the punk rock/new wave music scene of Philadelphia, from its very beginning. His photos include images of early appearances by such legends as The Ramones, The Talking Heads, Gang of Four, The B-52’s, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Blondie and many, many more. They include shots of performances, backstage scenes, and record store appearances. While these photographs were sometimes published in magazines like New York Rocker, Trouser Press, and assorted local publications, most of the images remained unseen by the general public — until 2025, when a Philadelphia photography gallery hosted a show of these images called I BELONGED TO THE BLANK GENERATION, to an enthusiastic reception.

This show, BOYS ABOUT TOWN, focuses exclusively on images of The Jam, captured on three separate tours of the U.S.A. The Jam were always one of Schwartz’s favorite bands, and looking through his old negatives (most of which had never been printed), he realized there was enough there to make an entire exhibition devoted to this important group. The silver gelatin, all analog-process enlargements were newly printed, expressly for the Euro Ye Ye show.

By the early 1990s, Jay Schwartz had all but abandoned serious photography, concentrating instead on collecting and exhibiting 16mm prints of rare and cult movies, and his Secret Cinema screening series continues to this day. Starting in 1995, and returning for the following decade, Secret Cinema was a guest presenter of the Festival Internacional de Cine de Gijón.
